Simple, proactive steps can dramatically improve the air quality in your home. From changing filters regularly to controlling humidity and improving ventilation, these tips help every South Florida household breathe easier.

Filter Upgrades: Your Highest-Impact First Step

Upgrade your central HVAC filter to a minimum MERV 11, ideally MERV 13 if your air handler supports it. Change it every 30–45 days — not the 90-day interval on the package. In South Florida, systems run nearly year-round and filters load up faster than in seasonal climates. A loaded filter does not filter — it restricts airflow while allowing particles to bypass the media.

If anyone in your household has asthma, allergies, or respiratory conditions, supplement your central HVAC filtration with a True HEPA portable air purifier in the bedroom. Run it continuously. The AHAM CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating will tell you the right size for each room — target a CADR of at least 2/3 of the room’s square footage in CFM.

Humidity: The Number That Controls Everything Else

Get a digital hygrometer and put it in your main living area. If it reads above 55% regularly while your AC is running, you have a dehumidification problem — not just a comfort problem. Persistent humidity above 55% enables dust mite proliferation in mattresses and carpeting, mold growth in wall cavities, biological buildup in your HVAC drain pan, and elevated VOC off-gassing from building materials.

Target: maintain indoor RH between 45–52% year-round. If your AC alone cannot achieve this, a whole-home dehumidifier installed in your air handler system is the correct solution — not cranking the AC colder, which wastes energy without addressing the moisture load.

Ventilation and Source Control

Ventilation dilutes indoor pollutants with fresh outdoor air, but in South Florida the calculus is different from most of the country: outdoor air is often humid, sometimes carrying pollen, red tide aerosols, or wildfire smoke. The goal is not to maximize fresh air at all times — it is to ventilate strategically.

Kitchen: always run your range hood when cooking (vented to exterior, not recirculating). Gas ranges produce CO, NO2, and fine particles with every use. Bathrooms: exhaust fans must vent to the exterior — not into the attic. An attic-vented bathroom fan dumps moisture directly into your roof structure. Verify yours exits through the soffit or roof cap. Cleaning products, paints, adhesives, and pesticides: use outdoors or with maximum ventilation. VOCs from these products spike indoor air concentrations immediately upon use.

Source control — removing or reducing the emission source — is always more effective than diluting or filtering it after the fact.

Bedroom Air Quality: Highest Priority Space

You spend 6–8 hours in your bedroom every night. The cumulative exposure from sleeping in a high-allergen, high-humidity environment is significant. Bedroom-specific priorities: allergen-impermeable mattress and pillow encasements (the most cost-effective single allergen intervention per AAAAI guidelines), wash all bedding weekly in water at 130°F or above to kill dust mites, remove or regularly vacuum carpeting (dust mites live in carpet fibers at far higher densities than hard floors), keep pets out of the bedroom if anyone has allergies, and run a True HEPA purifier continuously.
