Generator Use and Carbon Monoxide: Florida’s Hidden Post-Storm Killer
Every hurricane season, the headlines focus on wind and water — but in Florida, carbon monoxide poisoning from portable generator misuse consistently accounts for more deaths in the days following major storms than the storms themselves. The CDC documented over 800 non-fire CO poisoning deaths in the United States in hurricane aftermath from 2004–2017, with Florida representing a disproportionate share. After Hurricane Ian in 2022 and Irma in 2017, CO poisoning fatalities made statewide news.
Carbon monoxide is undetectable by human senses — it is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. This makes it uniquely dangerous: by the time symptoms appear (headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion), a victim may already be incapacitated and unable to self-rescue. The physiological mechanism is straightforward: CO binds to hemoglobin with 200–250 times greater affinity than oxygen, displacing O2 from red blood cells and causing cellular hypoxia. At concentrations above 70 ppm, symptoms appear within hours. At 400 ppm, incapacitation can occur within 3 hours. At 1,600 ppm, death can occur within 1 hour.
The Garage Myth: Why “Near-Outside” Isn’t Safe
The most common and most deadly generator placement mistake in Florida is operating the generator in a garage — even with the garage door fully open. This feels intuitive as a protection: the generator is “outside” the living space, the door is open, there is ventilation. But garage structures, soffit overhangs, and adjacent wall penetrations create CO concentration pathways that route exhaust directly into the home. The CPSC, NFPA, and CDC all cite garage placement — open door or not — as one of the leading causes of generator-related CO deaths. The generator must be placed a minimum of 20 feet from any door, window, or vent opening of any occupied structure.
What “Safe” Generator Placement Actually Looks Like
OSHA and the CPSC recommend the following for portable generator placement:
- A minimum of 20 feet from all doors, windows, and vents — including HVAC fresh-air intakes
- Never under an awning, carport, or porch cover, even if open on the sides
- Never inside any structure: not a garage, not a shed, not a screened porch
- Positioned so exhaust points away from the house and any neighboring structures
- On a dry, level surface away from combustible materials
Note that wind direction matters: a generator placed 20 feet away with exhaust pointing toward the house can still create dangerous indoor CO concentrations if wind carries exhaust toward open windows or HVAC intakes. Check exhaust direction relative to your home’s openings and prevailing wind.
Carbon Monoxide Detectors: Your Last Line of Defense
Every Florida home should have CO detectors on every occupied floor, within 15 feet of each sleeping area, per NFPA 720 guidelines. UL 2034 is the standard for CO alarm performance — look for this certification when purchasing. CO detectors should be tested monthly and replaced every 5–7 years (check manufacturer specs; the electrochemical sensors degrade over time).
Critically: if your CO alarm sounds, do not investigate the source yourself. Exit the building immediately, leave the door open behind you, call 911, and do not re-enter until first responders have verified CO levels are safe. Every year, people die re-entering a CO-compromised building to “check on” a family member or pet.
Other Post-Storm CO Sources
Generators get the most attention, but they are not the only post-storm CO source Florida homeowners face:
- Charcoal and propane grills indoors: Never burn charcoal or operate a propane grill inside any structure, including a garage. This is responsible for a significant share of non-generator CO deaths annually.
- Propane camping stoves: Same rules apply — outdoor use only, minimum 20 feet from occupied structures.
- Gas appliances with storm-damaged venting: If your home sustained structural damage, have your gas furnace, water heater, and range flue venting inspected before use. Damaged or dislodged flue pipes route combustion gases directly into the living space.
- Vehicles running in garages: Never warm up a vehicle in an attached garage, even with the door open.
If You Suspect CO Exposure
Symptoms that may indicate CO poisoning include sudden headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, shortness of breath, confusion, and blurred vision. These symptoms are non-specific and are often attributed to stress, heat, or dehydration in storm conditions. If multiple people (or pets) are symptomatic simultaneously indoors, treat it as a CO emergency: exit immediately, call 911, and move to fresh air. CO poisoning is treated with high-flow oxygen — in severe cases, hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
